Black-bellied Plover Pluvialis squatarola

The Black-bellied Plover is a common winter resident all around the Florida coasts.  Numbers increase the further south one goes.  These birds typically arrive in August-September after breeding in Alaska and northern Canada.  They depart in April-May to head north to their breeding grounds.  However, a few of the birds remain in Florida throughout the summer.
