Common Loon Gavia immer

The Common Loon breeds from the Arctic Circle south to the northern United States.  They also breed in Greenland, Iceland, and Great Britain.  During the winter months, they migrate southward, visiting the coastlines and large inland lakes in southern Europe and southern United States.

In Florida, this species is a fairly common winter resident on the Gulf coast south to Sanibel Island and the Atlantic coast south to Brevard County.  The majority of these birds arrive in November and depart in April.
