Gray Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis

Eastern Gray Squirrels are quite common throughout Florida.  They are found in urban and woodland areas, especially around oak and hickory trees.  Their main diet consists of acorns and nuts, but they also eat birds, fruits, and berries, seeds, and insects.

This squirrel is one of very few mammalian species that can descend a tree head-first.  It does this by turning its feet so the claws of the hind feet are backward and can grip the tree bark.
