Snail Kite Rostrhamus sociabilis

The Snail Kite ranges from the Caribbean, and southern Mexico to northern Argentina.  In the United States, it is found only in Florida.

In Florida, these Kites are found mainly in Central and South Florida, where they are year-round residents.  Because their diet consists primarily of apple snails, their range is limited and variable, depending to a great extent on the amount of rainfall.  They typically breed from December through August.  Because of their small population, it is listed as a federal and state endangered species.
