The Monk Parakeet is native to South America. They were first reported in the United States in the New York City area in 1967. They have slowly spread and by 1995 they have been reported in about a dozen states. Large colonies are present in Florida, Illinois and New York.
In Florida, there are strong breeding colonies in Dade and Pinellas Counties. They usually breed during the months from March - July.
