During the summer months, the Broad-winged Hawk breeds in the eastern and mid-western portions of Canada and the United States south to the Gulf coast and Florida.  They migrate south to winter in Mexico and the northern part of South America.

In Florida, this species is an uncommon breeder, occurring in the Panhandle and the northern peninsula south to Levy County.  They breed from March through June.
