Clapper Rail Rallus longirostris

The Clapper Rail is a permanent resident along North America’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts from about New Jersey southward into Tamaulipas, Mexico, including the islands of the western Caribbean.  On the west coast, it is found from central California through Mexico and south to northwestern Peru.

The Clapper Rail is a permanent resident of Florida and is found along both coasts around tidal marshes.  Nesting usually occurs during the March-July time frame.  During the winter months, their population is augmented by migrants from farther north.
