Royal Tern Thalasseus maximus

In North America, Royal Terns spend their summers breeding along the mid-Atlantic and southeastern Atlantic coasts, the Gulf coast, and the coasts of southern California and the Baja peninsula.  During the winter months they move southward.

In Florida, these birds are found along both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.  Occasionally they are found inland along large lakes.  Although their numbers increase during the winter months due to migrating birds, there are some that stay year round.  Breeding colonies have been observed along both coasts.
