Burrowing Owl Athena cunicularia

There are two populations of Burrowing Owls in the U.S. with no range overlap.  The western population occurs in all states west of the Mississippi Valley.  They breed south through the western and mid-western states  These birds extend south into Mexico, Central America and the northern portion of South America.  A separate population is found in Florida and the Carribean Islands.

In Florida, the Burrowing Owl is a permanent resident over a wide area of the state except for the Everglades and the panhandle.  The center of their range is the prairies of Osceola, DeSoto, and Okeechobee counties.
