American Avocet Recurvirostra americana

The American Avocet breeds from southern British Columbia eastward to southern Ontario and southward through the central western states to central Mexico.  During the winter months, they can be found along the Pacific coast from northern California southward, the Gulf coast and the Atlantic coast from North Carolina southward to Cuba, Belize, and Guatemala.

Although Avocets have been recorded in Florida during every month of the year, they are not known to breed here.  During the winter months, they are casual visitors in north Florida, becoming more numerous southward.
