The Bufflehead spends its summers in sub-tundra Canada. It winters along the entire North American Pacific Coast, the southern states and Mexico. On the Atlantic Coast, it winters from north Florida to Canada. In Florida, it is a common winter resident along the northwest Gulf Coast. It is uncommon in the northern interior, upper Atlantic Coast and central Gulf Coast. It is a rare visitor in the central interior and southern portion of Florida.
